The Black Swans of Dawlish, Devon and their three gorgeous cygnets.

The Black Swans of Dawlish, Devon and their three gorgeous cygnets.

Pale grey balls of fluff with black eyes, beaks and feet they are delightful and very different from their parents with their elegant black feathers, red eyes and beaks.

Mum and dad kept an eye on the chicks never leaving them for a moment, the seagulls being a threat to these fluffy bundles of feathers.

Black Swans originate from Australia but have been swimming on Dawlish’s river for a hundred years along with a variety of ducks from foreign lands.

This years winter has been extremely mild and when I visited Dawlish last week it was warm. The cygnets were thriving in this Spring weather.

Black Swans are herbivores eating aquatic and marshland plants and algae. The Black Swans were pulling at the grass and eating the algae present in the water.

Dawlishs Black Swans are always a delight to watch…their elegance is stunning.

  1. Thank you for sharing these wonderful photos of the black swans. Recently I discovered the webcam for the black swans of Dawlish. Today I thought I’d search for “black swans of Dawlish” on Google. Your post here is one of the top results. It’s so wonderful how we can discover wonderful things like this on the other side of the world through the internet.

    • Thank you.. I didn’t know I was on the site, I will check. Black Swans, although Australian birds, have been part of Dawlish for many years. Beautiful and elegant with delightful cygnets.
      Glad you liked my photos.
